Dear Educators of Kalamak Indian Residential School In B.C.,
I have heard from several sources that the students in your school aren’t being treated fairly. It is a possibility that you may have a different opinion on how you think you’re supposed to teach but I have heard from my sources that your way of teaching is not fair and abuses children. I would like to suggest some alternatives for punishments instead of giving them “the strap”. One alternative could be to KINDLY give them a reminder on what the rules are and what they’re supposed to be doing at the time. Another alternative would be to make them sit out side or sit facing the wall as a punishment instead of whipping them. While we’re talking about rules, one rule that I have an issue with in your school is the rule that everyone has to be the same and follow your culture and ways, also known as assimilation. (Christianity is what I heard your culture was). Instead of forcing your culture into their mind, why not focus on actually teaching them the ABCs or how to read and write.
I expect that these suggestions are highly considered.
